Artist Statement

Lucille Marcotte has created a world on canvas, in which her characters are formed by minimal and energetic lines. These characters come to life in a sea of the white canvas, that invites the viewer to feel rather to see, and to experience rather than to appropriate. With movement, colors ans space Marcotte takes us in the soul and the mystery of the characters that inhabit her paintings. This absence of detail, the viewer allows himself to see his owns reflection in her work.
From the very beginning, the body has appeared as a privileged representational subject and it still reappears often as a theme. To breathe life into this state of tension, the body is seized in its movement while the space around it seems to stay still. You can feel the texture of rough surfaces that press against the empty spaces, silent and fragile where light emanates from deep within. Against matter, nothingness is a living entity, they penetrate each other in the work.
